Those of you who missed this race really missed a classic race! This race
is no longer a predict. It is now handicapped by age, sex, height/weight, body type, and
overall 5K ability. The runners this year had a terrific time. Starting with beautiful
weather, they checked in at the registration table to discover they had to answer some
very personal questions. As in: How old are you? Are you male or female? What do you
weigh? How tall are you? What is your best 5K time lately? Then we drug out a
"caliper" to do a measurement their elbows! (I started off using a large pair of
water pump pliers, but Woody produced a real caliper soon after everybody stopped
laughing). This is a documented measurement that tells us if you have a small, medium, or
large frame. We used this information to determine from another chart if the runner
received a time handicap for being over optimal weight for their height. All data except
the 5K ability was based on charts derived from legitimate racing organizations.
We will be doing some minor adjustments to the formula, but overall everyone had a great
time and loved the format. The runners started in a staggered scenario based on their
handicap time. Then it was a race to see if the faster hares could catch the slower
tortoises. The main idea was to have handicaps that would get everyone to the finish line
fairly close to each other.
When you look at the results, you will think that the formula is wrong because one guy ran
away from the pack and finished with a handicap time that was two minutes ahead of anyone
else. However
..If a runner shows up who is state/national or world class then
they should run away and hide. Check out the winner info. Don Ardell is the world
triathlon record holder for his age group. At low altitude he runs around 20.30 for 5K
(Local guys not to worry, Don was here for one day only. He left for Tampa on Sunday.)
We will have this format again. Do not miss it!!!!
