Daily Notes

Thursday, July 3rd.  58 degrees, warming quickly to the mid 60s, mostly sunny, no wind.  This was the last training run before race day.  Most people took it easy and are in taper mode.  Some are also running in tomorrow's 4th of July race.  There was also a good 6-10 newbies who came out so they could get some time in on the trail before race day.  The rain yesterday afternoon left the trail in good shape, and the air nice and fresh.  Lots of deer were spotted.

Tuesday, July 1st.  59 degrees, warming quickly to the upper 60s, sunny, no wind.  It's the last week before the race, and everybody is looking in good shape.  A few even showed up early so they would have more time to run further up high drive.  A few runners also came out for the first time so they could get a feel for the trail.  4 deer, including a fawn, and fox were spotted.

Thursday, June 26th.  61 degrees, warming a little bit, mostly sunny, no wind.  A smaller than usual group showed up, but they still attacked the hills with vengeance (or at least tried to survive the hills).  4 of the participants (Mike Shafai, John Gardner, Tim Steffans, Bill Cherrier) had biked to the park and were riding the trails.  All in all, it was a good day for both running and biking.

Tuesday, June 24th.  55 degrees, warming to the upper 50s, sunny, no wind.  It was another perfect running day and just another beautiful day in Colorado Springs.  Most people ran the race course getting up to at least the bottom of High Drive or higher.  A few ran some adjacent trails in the park.  2 deer were spotted.

Thursday, June 19th.  60 degrees, partly cloudy and dry.  Slight breeze.  Perfect running weather!  A slightly smaller group than usual, which was surprising given the near-perfect conditions.  Many of the runners made it to the turnaround.  A few of us did some hill intervals.  With Dave gone, Mike delivered a "motivational" tirade to send everyone off: "Okay, it's 6 o'clock.  Stop standing around.  Get going up that hill.   After all, this is a running group."  After some milling about, everyone took off.

Tuesday, June 17th.  59 degrees, cloud cover, half-way through the run the clouds had mostly burnt off, no wind.  The hills are actually starting to feel a little easier, except for that first one, which is always a shock.  As before, several of the faster runners made it to the race turn-around on High Drive.  Most made it to the bottom of High Drive.  5 deer were spotted, and a couple of photographers were out taking close-up pictures of the deer.

Thursday, June 12th.  45 degrees, warming to about 50, sunny skies, no wind.  It was a little chilly for the middle of June.  I guess all the wind last evening blew away the warm air.  We had another decent-sized crowd to attack the hills in Bear Creek Park.  Many mentioned how beautiful the view is along the trail.  We are certainly blessed to have so many wonderful trails so close in to the city.  A few runners did the entire 12K or pretty darn close to it.  Most runners made it to at least High Drive.  3 deer and 1 coyote was spotted.

Tuesday, June 10th.  51 degrees, warming to about 60, sunny skies, no wind.  A good sized group showed up for the first Roundup Training run.  Most people had run the Garden 10 Mile this past weekend, so there was still some tired legs out there.  Most people made it as far as Bear Creek Road, and some ventured further and tackled High Drive.  All in all, it was a beautiful day and a good run.  1 deer, 1 squirrel and 1 bear were spotted.
