Thursday, July 5: Temps around 60, clear skies and no wind. Today was the final day of training runs at Bear Creek Park, so we did something special. We had a Poker Run, where runners would collect cards at various points out on the trail. Then the 4 runners with the best poker hands won a gift certificate from Home Depot. It turned out that you needed at least a 3-of-a-kind to be in the money. The consolation prizes were some scratch-off lottery tickets. We also had some refreshments for everybody to enjoy. The trail was muddy from the heavy rain yesterday afternoon. Hopefully the muddy spots will dry out by Sunday. There are still some unofficial training runs next week. Some runners will be meeting at the Cog Railway at 6:00 am on Tuesday/Thursday to run Barr Trail. Others will go back to the Garden of the Gods and run the trails and roads in the Garden. No wildlife was spotted this moring.
Tuesday, July 3: 61 degrees, warming to the mid 60s, clear skies with no wind. This is our last week at Bear Creek Park since the race is on this Sunday. But there will still be options next week. Some runners are going to meet at the Cog Railway on Tuesday/Thursday mornings at 6:00 am and run Barr Trail. Other runners will be meeting back at Garden of the Gods at 6:00 am on Tuesday/Thursday mornings. As always, everybody is welcome to come out and participate. Today's run was the usual Summer Roundup course. We had a new runner from Pennsylvania, but she had no fear of the hills and altitude and did very well. We'll be doing something a little special at the last run on Thursday, so be sure to show up. No wildlife was spotted today.
Saturday, June 30: Low 60s, rising to the upper 60s, clear skies with no wind. Today was a dress rehearsal of the entire 12K course. About 12 people showed up. It was a very pleasant day with comfortable temperatures and friendly runners. Everybody got in a good workout and said the climbing doesn't get any easier, especially along High Drive. 2 deer were spotted.
Thursday, June 28: 60 degrees, clear and sunny to start with, giving way to mostly cloudy skies. It rained and hailed in this part of town yesterday afternoon, so the trail was damp, but in good shape. This actually provides better traction than when the trail is bone dry. We had a smaller group today. Everybody seems to running a little further and getting stronger. We'll be having a dress rehearsal on Saturday at 7:00 am and run the entire 12K course. On the wildlife front, Esme DeLange came across a deer in the middle of the trail and was within 4-5 feet of the deer and it didn't seem to be bothered at all. The deer here are pretty tame, to say the least.
Tuesday, June 26: 67 degrees, warming to the mid 70s, mostly clear skies with a light breeze. It's getting warmer and the breeze felt good today. It hasn't rained in this part of town for nearly 2 weeks, so the trail is getting bone dry and softer. But that didn't stop us from attacking the hills. Many people made it part way up High Drive, where there is welcome shade. We announced that there will be a dress rehearsal on this Saturday at 7:00 am. Anybody who is interested in running the entire 12K course is welcome to show up. You'll need to carry your own water. 2 deer were spotted today.
Thursday, June 21: 59 degrees, warming to around 70, sunny skies with no wind. Once the sun got up a bit, it really started to warm up. Some of the runners dealt with this by going out the main trail that follows the race course, but then coming back via the Nature Center, where a drinking fountain is a welcome sight. I tried to sell a different route this morning, pointing out the trails between 21st and 8th Street on the east side of Bear Creek Park. But nearly everyone still ran the trails on the west side of Bear Creek Park. I ran the trails on the east side and came across several walkers out giving their dog some exercise, and a group of Army runners out for some morning exercise. We are half way through these training runs now. Lots of wildlife was spotted today, including a fox, rabbits, a deer, and a jackalope (spotted by Tim Steffens). Tim said the jackalope was holding up a 4 in one hand, a 5 in another hand, and had a can of Coors Light. It is going to be a hot day, so this jackalope is no dummy.
Tuesday, June 19: 52 degrees, warming to around 60, sunny skies with no wind. A larger group showed up this morning, so most everybody was able to find somebody who runs their pace. We ran the course again, going up and up and up. A few headed over to the Nature Center for a change of pace, and JD McKenna did some speed work. It was an absolutely beautiful day, cool and pleasant. There's a heat wave coming, so it may not be so cool on Thursday. 1 deer was seen today.
Thursday, June 14: 52 degrees, warming to around 60, sunny skies with no wind. We ran the same route as last time, heading up and up and up. Getting to High Drive and going up it a bit seemed to be the goal for most people. A couple of runners took the branch that heads up to Lower Gold Camp Road, and that's just as good as a workout. A couple of other runners were doing speedwork, with 1 minute of fast running, followed by 1 minute of recovery, and repeating that over and over again. 2 deer were spotted.
Tuesday, June 12: 59 degrees with cloud cover, no wind. It was a beautiful morning, as the vegetation in Bear Creek Park is at its peak. It rained a bit overnight, which made the traction on the trails very good. We started out as one large group and natural groups tended to form based on ability level. We followed the Summer Roundup route, heading up and up and up. Most runners made it at least to Bear Creek Road. Some went beyond that and headed up High Drive. Those that went up High Drive to where the course turns around gained about a 1000 feet in altitude before heading back. But that's no problem. It's all in a morning's workout. 1 deer was spotted munching on some tree leaves.
