Thursday, July 6th. 59 degrees, warming maybe 1 or 2 degrees, cloudy with lots of moisture in the air left over from yesterday's storms. This was the last Roundup training run of the season. A smaller group came out, but they all had great enthusiasm. After the rains, the trails are still in fairly decent shape with just a few spots where significant erosion has occurred. Most people went to about the bottom of High Drive, with a few going up higher. With cooler and wetter weather the norm now, it should be a good day for racing on Sunday.
Thursday, June 29th. 56 degrees, warming to the mid 60s, no wind. Another large group showed up today. Everybody knows the route by now and went out and attacked the hills. Those darn things just won't flatten out, no matter how hard we try to level them out. Oh well, it certainly is good training.
Tuesday, June 27th. Very cool morning before the run. Sun was up and warmed things up! Sam Giamarvo strained his knee and it looks like he may be out of the running. He got in about 1/2 mile before needing to turn around and walk back.
Thursday, June 22nd. I was on a plane so I'm not sure what happened, but I'm sure everybody ran their behind off and shaved about 10 minutes off of their time for running the course. From the air, the steepness of the trails didn't look bad at all.
Tuesday, June 20th. Another warm day with temps in the upper 60s and rising to the low 70s. But that didn't stop a decent sized group from coming out and attacking the hills. Jack Ramsey showed up early and ran the entire course. Others ran a portion of the course, from about 6+ miles to around 4 miles. This course is definitely good training for the Barr Trail Mountain Race and the Pikes Peak Ascent & Marathon.
Thursday, June 15th. Another day in the 60s with mostly sunny skies and a light breeze. We could smell smoke from the fire down south in Westcliffe. We attacked the race course route again, trying to figure out the best way to pace yourself on the hills. It's sort of an iterative process as everybody figures out what works best for them. It is advisable to wear sunglasses or a visor on race day, as the sun is right in your race and the way back down the trail.
Tuesday, June 13th. 64 degrees, sunny with a light breeze, warming to the upper 60s. A good sized group showed up for the first training run. Some were still a bit sore from the Garden 10 Miler 2 days ago, but everybody had a smile on their face and was ready to go. We all started out together and did an out-and-back on the course. Many made it quite a ways up High Drive before turning around and heading back to the barn. With the lack of moisture this year, the trail is pretty soft in quite a few places.
