Thursday, July 7: 56 degrees with no clouds, warming to the upper 60s during the run. Today was the last training run for the Roundup and it was a taper day. So the advertised route was to follow the course to the first reservoir, run around it and then come back. Most people followed that route, but a couple decided to go up the big hill that is past the 2nd reservoir. 5 deer were seen grazing on the school grounds.
Tuesday, July 5: 57 degrees with cloud cover, so the temperatures stayed cool during the workout. Based on Scheri's suggestion, the recommended route today was both the lower and upper sections. Sam even threw in the parking lot loop to that and ran the entire course. It was a good workout and everybody seems to be ready to go on the weekend.
Saturday, July 2: A large group (more than 30) showed up to run the entire course. It was about 60 degrees at the start, and warming to the 70s. The group ran the entire route, including the loop around the parking lot. All in all, everybody had a good time and learned where the easy, moderate, and tough sections of the course are at. We forgot to take attendance, but everybody who was there knows who they are. Only one person got lost.
Thursday, June 30: A beautiful sunrise with no clouds, 55 degrees and warming to the low 60s during the run. Thursday is the day for the upper trails, so we took the shortcut to the first reservoir and then followed the course route past the 2nd reservoir and up Gold Camp Path to the high point at just over 7000'. From there, it's mostly downhill on the way back, following the course route back down to the reservoir area and then following the Ponderosa and Chamberlain trails. In total, it was a good 5+ mile workout.
Tuesday, June 28: Sunny skies once again, 61 degrees and warming to around 70 during the run. The recommended route was the lower trails to a little bit past the second reservoir. But most everybody was an overachiever and blew right past the 2nd reservoir and went to the high point of the course at just over 7000 feet. The total was 5+ miles for most runners.
Thursday, June 23: Sunny skies once again, 59 degrees and warming a few degrees. We went for the upper trails today, taking the shortcut to the lower reservoir, then following the course route from there for a total of more than 5 miles. Most everybody was able to follow the course route without getting on any of the side trails. 2 deer were seen grazing in the tall grasses, and a gaggle of bicyclists were seen riding up the service road.
Tuesday, June 21: Sunny skies, 65 degrees, warming a few degrees during the workout. A course change has occurred since we last met, so we went over the course changes. The workout included the lower trails, going past the 2nd reservoir and then turning around and following the course back to the high school. More people are getting accustomed to the trail options, as only a few people took a wrong turn at the various places where the trail branches. Some of the runners went all the way to the upper trails and got to the high point at the top of Gold Camp Path.
Thursday, June 16: Clear skies with starting temps around 55, warming to the 60s during the run. We worked on the upper trails today by taking the shortcut to the lower reservoir, going over to the second reservoir, and then following Gold Camp Path to the high point of the course near the trailhead at Lower Gold Camp Road. The route then returns via a short portion on the Chutes, followed by all of the Upper Meadows Loop. At least that was the advertised route. Some people got off course so we'll have to figure out a better way to give out meaningful directions at the beginning of the run. But I think everybody got in about a 5-mile workout with around 700 feet of elevation gain from the start area to the high point.
Tuesday, June 14: First day of these training runs on a beautiful morning. 45 degrees with clear skies, warming to the 50s during the workout. There is not enough runners to break into smaller groups so we all started out together. The route today was to the lower reservoir via the Upper Meadows, Ponderosa, Stratton Springs, Wildflower Path trails and the service road. We took the short way back to the high school for a total of more than 4 miles.
